Dehumidifiers Reviews

The Purpose of a Dehumidifier

water dropBasically, a dehumidifier is something that helps to remove the humidity from your home. There are different types of humidifiers available and so it is important to know the difference between each one before you rush out and purchase one for your home.

The different types of humidifiers include:

- Chemical Absorbent Dehumidifiers- Dehumidifying Ventilators- Heat Pump Dehumidifiers

Generally, the heat pump dehumidifiers are the ones most commonly used within the home. They use a heat pump similar to an air conditioning pump to remove the water from the air. The fan within the dehumidifier draws the air inward. It is then passed along a cold coil which condenses the water and it drips down into the dehumidifier.

A chemical dehumidifier is mainly used in warmer places and they work through the use of a chemical drying agent. The agent is used on a heat exchange wheel and it absorbs the molecules of water from the air.

However the trouble with these types of dehumidifiers is that they take a lot of energy to function as they send the damp air outside through vents. They can be used within the home but they tend to be better suited to workplaces.

Finally, dehumidifying ventilators are used to control the humidity within the home. They are the least commonly used because they can actually be quite dangerous. They use an exhaust fan and a sensor controller.

They are not really suited to muggy climates because they tend to draw the air in from outside. So the best place for this type of dehumidifier is the basement. The reason they are dangerous is because they can depressurize a room and that in turn can cause a gas spillage. So if you are using one in a room with a gas furnace, always ensure that it is properly vented.

The Differences between Dehumidifiers

Once you have chosen which type of dehumidifier you want to use within the home, you then have to understand the options available to you.

Each dehumidifier can hold a different amount of water. It all depends upon how much humidity you have within your home. If you have high humidity then you will need a dehumidifier that has a large water capacity.

If on the other hand you only suffer from slight humidity then you will only need a dehumidifier with a small water capacity and therefore that will also be cheaper.

When looking into the capacity of a dehumidifier it is important to note that it is worked out based upon how much water the unit can hold within 24 hours. The amount shown to you is usually in pints and you can purchase dehumidifiers that can hold up to 100 pints of water per day.

However for the home 40 pints of water is usually a better figure and it is unlikely that you will need a dehumidifier within the home that holds more than that.

Another factor to consider is that all dehumidifiers will have different functions. Some will have an adjustable humidistat and others will have an auto shut off function. Generally you want to look for a dehumidifier that has the following features:

Key Features to Look for:

- Auto shut off- Adjustable humidistat- Automatic reset- Auto signal light

All of the above functions can prove to be essential when it comes to using the dehumidifier. The auto shut off feature is especially useful as it will automatically shut the dehumidifier off when it becomes full.

This will really help to prevent the unit from breaking after becoming too full and from a leak occurring. It is not always possible to keep a close eye on the dehumidifier and so an auto shut off feature is definitely recommended.

An adjustable humidistat can also come in extremely useful as you may have a home which suffers from different levels of humidity at different times of the day.

Some homes may suffer from high humidity all throughout the day, whereas some homes may have a high humidity in the morning and at night, but they may be perfectly fine throughout the day. In these circumstances being able to change the strength of the dehumidifier is definitely an advantage.

The automatic reset button is quite clever in the fact that it will automatically start once the drain pan has been emptied. This reduces the need for you to press a lot of buttons to get the unit to restart and it saves a lot of hassle.

Finally, the auto signal light is another handy feature as it will allow you to see when the dehumidifier is working. That way if it turns on and you don't want it on, you can easily turn it off. If you have no idea when the unit is working and when it isn't then obviously you would not be able to switch it off that easily.

Sticking to Your Budget

The main thing to remember when looking out for a dehumidifier is that you want to stick to your budget. You can find a dehumidifier to suit all budgets and just because a unit is cheaper, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is not as good as a higher priced unit. So stick to your budget and get the best dehumidifier you can for what you can afford.

Just as long as you keep in mind the size of the room that you will be using the dehumidifier in, you should easily be able to find a good unit to suit your needs. If your home has a high humidity level then purchases a dehumidifier which has a larger water capacity.

Choosing the right dehumidifier to suit your needs can be complicated if you do not understand much about the different types available.

Using the advice above, you should now easily be able to find a dehumidifier to suit you and your budget. There are so many different ones to choose from that there is no reason why you should have to suffer with a humidity problem within the home.
