EdgeStar Slimline 10,000 BTU Air Conditioner - Portable

In my house, the family room is located in the basement and can be one of the warmest rooms in the house in the summer time. Because it is located in the basement and there are no full sized windows in the room, it was difficult coming up with a solution to help cool it off.
Finally, I broke down and started looking at portable air conditioners, even if they are a bit more expensive than window units. After some research I decided on the EdgeStar Slimline 10,000 BTU Air Conditioner. I decided on it because it did not need a hookup to the outside in order to get rid of excess water vapor.
While it does an ok job cooling the area around it, it does not do a good job of getting the entire den nice and cold, the way that I like my rooms. I did not know if it is because my den is not closed off to the stairwell, and a lot the cool air escapes, or if this unit is not big enough for the space. I decided since my air conditioner in my bedroom was dying to move it up there to see if it worked any better. In the smaller space it did a great job of cooling the room, and getting it nice and cold. The unit did not freeze up even after running for several hours straight.
So once the unit is working in the proper area, the only downside to it is the fact that it operates loudly, a little louder than my old through the wall unit that I had upstairs. The good news is that it did not take up much room, as it has a footprint of only about one square foot. This year I will be once again looking for a new unit for downstairs, and while the EdgeStar 10,000 BTU isn’t it, I will be looking for a similar unit with many more BTUs.
