Goldstar GWHD6500R Air Conditioner

Goldstar GWHD6500R Air Conditioner

Living in Maine means that the winters can be brutally cold and the temperature really heats up in the summer time. My bedroom is located on the second floor of my home, and has only one window to the outside.

This combination effectively turns my bedroom into a heat trap during hot summer days, sometimes stretching the temperature into the 90's.

About four years ago, in 2005, I decided that I should do something about this. I had previously used a combination of window fans and floor fans to cool my bedroom, but often found myself sleeping downstairs on the couch at night instead. Finally, I made the decision to purchase an air conditioner. In retrospect, this was probably one of the best investments that I have made.

I was hesitant to purchase one having heard horror stories of electricity consumption and poor reliability. After visiting several shops, I decided on the Goldstar GWHD6500R from Home Depot. I found that the Goldstar brand was manufactured by the technology based company LG, whose products I have trusted for years.

I spent approximately $140.00 on the air conditioner, which is a 6500 BTU/hr window mounted model. Fortunately, the Energy Star rating for this model was very impressive, and I noticed only a slight bump in my monthly electricity bill.

Installation of the air conditioner was relatively simple, but required screwing two metal brackets into your window pane. This wasn't a big deal for me, but it might be important to some people. The air conditioner, although heavy, mounted securely in my window, and contains curtain-like appendages to help it seal off a variety of different sized windows.

I was really impressed by the safety features of the plug; a grounded plug with a current interrupter helps to add some peace of mind if you leave the house with the air conditioner running.

The design of the Goldstar GWHD6500R is nice, although the overall appearance looks a bit outdated. However, I have been very impressed by some of the features that it has offered. It came with a remote control, which is great when you are laying in bed and do not want to get up to change the air conditioner.

It offers a variety of temperature and fan speed settings, as well as options for fan-only, dry, and cool air. You can choose to use it under normal operation or using the energy saver mode, and it turns on and off automatically to maintain an even temperature.

These features allow you to set the air conditioner to accommodate your own specific temperature needs. My experience has been very positive with this model. It cools very efficiently, and always spits out even, cool air. It is able to cool my 8' by 20' room with absolutely no problem.

The air conditioner is intelligently designed and regulates temperature very well. It also offers a timer feature. The only real downfall of the Goldstar GWHD6500R air conditioner is that it is somewhat loud. As this is my first window-mounted air conditioner, I do not have much of a basis to compare the operation noise to, but it does seem a little loud. In my opinion, this is a very fair trade off between performance and reliability.

I would recommend this air conditioner unconditionally to anybody. After hearing so many air conditioning horror stories, the Goldstar GWHD6500R was able to prove everybody else wrong. Bottom line- this is a powerful, effective, reliable, and inexpensive air conditioner that anybody would enjoy.
