Goldstar WG1005R 10000 BTU Air Conditioner

The Goldstar Air Conditioner is a great choice for those who wish to cool a small area. The thermostat control makes it energy efficient. The unit turns itself off when it has met the set temperature in the room. The user can set it to the temperature they find most comfortable without the usual fluctuations of temperature. The room does not get too cold or too warm. This is great for sleeping or for keeping a room from getting too hot while one is away.

Another pro for the unit is that it is remote controlled. There is no need to get up from your comfortable position to change the temperature or turn the unit off. The remote contains buttons that allows you to change the mode, temperature, and power of the unit. This is particularly handy if the unit is installed in a bedroom.

The unit has two major cons. The first is that it freezes up frequently. On very warm days when it is important for it to work well, it freezes and spits ice out of the vent. It is necessary in these instances to turn the unit off and wait for it to thaw out. On hot August days this is an inconvenience that outweighs the pros mentioned earlier.

The unit does not include an oscillating fan. The exclusion of an oscillating fan makes it difficult to cool a room evenly. Without the oscillating fan, the unit has difficulty cooling larger living areas.

it is an economical purchase
by: Anonymous

Pros
- it can cool one room well
- it is durable

Cons
- can only cool smaller rooms and spaces
- is noisy

I have a Goldstar WG1005R wall air conditioner. It's a drab beige color made from industrial looking plastic. It's not very attractive. However, given the low price, it was under $300, I would consider it a definite economical purchase. The unit itself is quite noisy. It sounds like a loud buzzing generator whenever in use. As for operating the model, it doesn't have an efficient temperature gauge, just a knob that blows cool to cooler or warm to warmer. This makes it hard to set the thermostat at a particular temperature for reasons such as conserving energy or regulating the temperature in the room, as it is not clear what "cooler" or "warm" translates to in actual degrees or Celsius. The fan application blows the warm air out of the motor, so it as well is not the most efficient.

As for the air conditioning capabilities. It blows cool air, but it doesn't seem to get icy cold unless it is on the highest fan blowing setting. It does have the ability to cool a room, but again, only on the highest and coldest setting and only a small room (the air flow will not reach other areas of your home). I wouldn't suggest this model as a single unit for an entire apartment or house, the it is commonly found as the main cooling unit in many rental properties, as it is really only capable of cooling a small area. I find I am most comfortable with this unti on, only when I am sitting directly in the flow of cool air. Furthermore, the vent only rotates slightly up and down and side to side, so there is not much room for adjusting the direction of the air flow. When installing this wall unit, you will need to keep this fact in mind and choose the placement area wisely or else you will be very disappointed with the cooling results and comfort level in the home.
