Haier 5200 BTU Window Air Conditioner w/Remote

by Josh
(Marietta, Ohio, United States)

I have owned this air conditioner going on three years now, and I have been overall fairly pleased with its performance. The air conditioner, which is in my 14 by 14 foot room where it is placed in the window, takes less than 5 minutes for the air to begin circulating around and adding a chill to the environment.

The unit is able to cool the room to the desired temperature in less than 20 minutes in most cases, and is able to maintain the cooler temperature even if the outdoor temperature skyrockets into the 90's or beyond.

The unit was fairly easy to install into my standard sized window, although the foam that is provided to place in the top of the window to seal out the air from coming in is highly inadequate and required me to purchase a supplemental piece from the local hardware store to properly seal off the air from outdoors.

In addition, the side panes that are attached fit flush to the normal sized window opening, allowing the air conditioner to sit in the window sill properly without risk of falling from the second floor down to the ground level. Be forewarned that the air conditioner's side panels are not meant for anything more than a regular window, so any intention on using this is a larger opening will require the user to purchase the extended length flaps from their local retailer.

The unit has worked tirelessly with very little impact on my electric bill despite use of 6 to 8 hours per day for the length of the summer season, about 3 to 4 months out of the year.

The unit has very few hiccups in use, save for occasional need to clean the included filer over the internal compressor. Also, setting the conditioner at too low of a temperature in a small space may result in the compressor developing ice on its insides, which can be easily melted and dealt with by raising the temperature, but the unnecessary strain on the unit that results causes the temperature to rise quickly in the room.

Overall, I would recommend this cost effective air conditioning unit for the person looking to cool a master bedroom or a small apartment unit, as it provides a good level of cooling for a small amount of power and a small cost upfront.

Super-quiet
by: Thomas Stowe

My wife and I moved into a new apartment that has central air but often the second bedroom we use as a home office and computer room gets warm. Not only is it in the direct sun more often than the other walls and windows in the house, but knowing computers well and the fact that my computer cooling setups aren't up to par for my laptops and my rack server it gets warm in that room far too often for us not to find a solution.

We went to Wal-mart and the cheapest unit was a similar model made by Haier and we chose to spend the extra twenty dollars to get a unit with a remote control. We have several remote control fans and hey, remote control t.v., fans, dvd players, stereo, we're just those type of people who like to control our appliances and electronics at a distance.

We've been moved into the apartment for roughly nine months and about six months ago I had the extra money to pick up one of these little window units. It works great and as it never gets to a point in the house that I'd call hot due to the central air conditioning throughout the apartment, this works very well and suits our needs very, very well. Turning it off while sitting in a recliner or desk chair from ten feet away is novel and new to me as I've been using manual control window units since I was a kid.

In Texas, the weather is so crazy that it will be hot during the day, very cool at night, rain the next day and less than a week late continuing that cycle, we'll have temperatures drop down to around forty degrees. It's super-quiet in comparison with some of the units I've had, most of them sounded like a small helicopter that eventually you'd have to get used to and this one definitely doesn't.

An internal thermometer with digital temperature readout that keeps time as well is a nice bonus and it only ran us around one hundred and twenty dollars. A great unit for small needs and if you're on a budget. I might replace it with a portable unit later to free the window, but it'll be okay for awhile and it does it's job.
