Holmes HAP240 Table Top HEPA Air Purifier with Ionizer for Medium Room

The nice people where I work often bring things in that they no longer have a need for, but think maybe a co-worker would want them. The items are usually placed in the coffee room for anyone to take, free. For at least two weeks I passed this little, white air purifier/ionizer. We had one in our home when I was a child, as both my parents smoked at the time and I think they thought the new technology would protect the family from any airborne harm. I still remember the smell of the ionizer, like that wonderful fragrance of the outside air after a summer rain.

This Holmes unit needed some TLC, as it appeared dusty and dirty. I finally gave in and adopted the rejected appliance. I sat in front of the TV with a screwdriver and took it apart. I was happy to see that it was easy to remove the top and access the filter for cleaning. It looks to be a replaceable filter but it cleaned up well. After a little work with a toothbrush, some soap and water, I had a brand new looking purifier. It has two switches, so you can filter the air with or without the ionizer.

This is handy, but I am not sure why you would ever not want the ionizer, with it's fresh air smell. Another plus, is the size of this clean air machine. It's only about 15 inches long and 6" high and weighs maybe 6 or 7 lbs. I have yet to find any negatives regarding this unit, other than possibly the noise. It has three power settings and I use the middle one, because on high it sounds like a jet engine warming up...and I wear earplugs while I sleep! I also wonder about energy consumption, as it is 100 watts. I need to check the electric bill since I started using it.
