Holmes HEPA-type Desktop Air Purifier - HAP242-UC

We've had it for about two or three weeks now, and it's been working great so far. We got it because it was one of the cheaper ones at the store. It only works for small rooms (109 square feet), but the room we are using it in is very small.

The noise it makes while filtering on the highest setting is too loud to be mere background noise, but soft and steady enough to be able to still easily fall asleep with it on. It's not very big (maybe 2 or 3 square feet?) and the white and grey colors blend nicely.

My biggest problem would have to be that it will not filter well in a bigger room.

Pros:
- attractive,
- makes room smell better

Cons:
- works for small rooms,
-noise

an excellent air purifier for a small room
by: Anonymous

Pros
- Reliable
- Low cost

Cons
- A little noisy on high
- Foreign made

The Holmes HAP 242 model is an excellent air purifier for a small room. It is designed for a room of about 10x11 in terms of footage. Features include a HEPA filter with Arm % Hammer brand baking soda added for odor elimination. It is designed to remove ragweed pollen, grass pollen, tree pollen, household dust, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander and smoke.

There are three settings available. Low is for quiet operation. Medium is for continuous use. High is for when air quality conditions are particularly bad. An optional ionizer switch on the unit can be used to boost performance while freshening the air. The unit is cerified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers to effectively reduce or eliminate tobacco smoke, dust, and pollens for a closed room up to 109 square feet.

I have had no serious problems of any type with the unit. It is very reliable and the unit is easy to open when you need to change the filter. The high setting may be too noisy for some, but the lower settings will work fine for most people. It is a reasonably priced unit available at most major retail stores that sell these types of units. I haven't had to replace the filter yet. I've had the unit for about a year now. The only negatives I can think of would be that it only covers a small area and you would have to obviously buy a unit for each room you need it in. I have one in a small bedroom currently.

This unit is NOT made in the USA if that's important to people (China and Mexico are listed as the nations of origin). On the plus side, the company has a website listed at www.holmesproducts.com plus an 800 number to call with questions. If purchased be sure to remove the plastic bag on the filter before operating the unit. It's easy to forget this!

fresher air!
by: Anonymous

Pros:
-effectively cleans the air
-inexpensive

Cons:
-on highest setting the fan is loud
-no color other than white

I purchased a Holmes HAP 242 Hepa-Type air purifier, which uses an Arm & Hammer baking soda filter. I purchased this to help remove stale odors, mostly smoke, from our home. Especially during the winter when we heat with a wood burning stove there is little air circulation so the air gets stale.

I purchased this at Target for less than $40. I had never owned an air purifier before and wasn’t convinced any of them would do much to help so I decided to try a low-end model first and see if anything improved. The set-up was easy: take from box, remove plastic wrapper, plug in and turn on!

I haven’t changed the filter yet so cannot say for sure if that’s as easy, though it doesn’t seem very involved. We only use the purifier to help clear the air in one room and it does seem to help freshen things in that room. (It was not supposed to do any more than that.)

The air is definitely fresher smelling and if I used it more frequently I’m sure that it would be even more improved. There is one reason for not using it more often: the fan is pretty loud, especially on the highest speed. (There are three speeds and the two lower ones are fairly quiet.)

There is an ionizer option that one can turn off and on. I usually run it with that “on” as it is supposed to clean the air more quickly. I think for other situations many may choose to keep it off, especially if worried about the impact of ionized air.

This model is quite compact, about the size of a large dictionary I’d say so it doesn’t take up much space and fits nicely in many situations. I do wish it had come in another color than grayish white but that’s all I could find.
