Humidifier Guide

A big reason today that people purchase humidifiers is for their newborn infants. It is common to have to use a suction device to suction out your baby's nose so they can breathe. It is very uncomfortable for a baby.

The more moisture in the air for a baby while they are sleeping, the better they sleep without being disrupted by mucus and other things blocking their passageway. Using a humidifier at night by the baby's crib is a fantastic way for your baby to get a good night sleep by giving them fresh air to breathe.

Another reason that people use humidifiers is to help with sleep. Many people sleep with a fan because they wake up stuffy and full of congestion. A humidifier works even better than a fan because it puts water into the air.

Your body needs to breathe in the moisture and it will clear out your sinuses and breathing passageway. Many people with problems with their lungs benefit from sleeping with a humidifier also.

A humidifier is not only for usage at night while you are sleeping. Some people like to have one going in their home all day long.

It is a good idea to do this during the cold winter months when the air causes your skin to be dry, your throat to be sore, and more. A humidifier is not only good for your breathing but it is good for your entire body; skin and hair too.

Types of Humidifiers

There are two major types which could be your best humidifier. The two different types are a cool mist humidifier and a warm mist humidifier.

A warm mist humidifier actually boils the water. When the water is boiled, a distilled steam is released into the air. You feel actually a spray of warm water instead of a cool vapor. In a cold room, the warm mist in the air is much easier to breathe for some people.

The most common uses for the warm mist humidifiers are for medical reasons and steaming medications. It is common for people to put a little Vicks vapor rub into one of these to get the ultimate cleansing of their breathing pathway and sinuses.

There are other medications people put in their warm mist humidifiers also. Doctors might prescribe a warm mist humidifier to be running in your home at all times.

Another good thing about a warm mist humidifier is that they are a little bit quieter than the cool mist humidifiers. This makes it nice if you absolutely cannot sleep because of the noise. You can buy a warm mist humidifier in a small portable unit.

The only thing that you might consider bad with a warm mist humidifier is that you must clean them more often than the cool ones because the warm water encourages bacteria to grow inside the machine.

A cool mist humidifier is a little bit noisier than the other models unless it actually has a silent feature, which some of them do. If the noise is important to you then you should look for a model with a silent feature.

The cool mist models pass water through a filter and over a wick, sending out a vapor into the air. These units can be purchased in different sizes depending on your needs for moisture in the air.

Many people like to use a cool mist humidifier in the summer months when it is very hot also. They will put ice water into the unit and place a fan in front of it. This will send an ice cold vapor into the air and the fan will push it throughout the room.

Some people have said that this little technique is capable of working better than an air conditioning unit and it is much cheaper to do.

You should use a humidifier if you suffer from your lips often being chapped; you have dry skin, sinus problems, dry cough, or trouble breathing. You can try to sleep with one in your bedroom at night neat your bed or you can have it running through the day also.

When the air in a house is very dry, static electricity forms and then furniture can crack and ruin their finish. A humidifier can help with problems like this too.

Humidifier Buying Advice

There are several things you might consider prior to making a purchase of a humidifier. These things include safety and shut off features, ease of handling and maintenance, noise levels, the type of humidifier, and the capacity of the humidifier.

If you are looking for a humidifier that you don't have to fill too often, then you might want to find a unit that holds more water. The size of the room is also a factor in the size of the humidifier and you should be sure to look on the packaging of the humidifier to verify the size of the room it will cover.

For instance, if you have a room that is 600 sq. ft. then you will need to find a model appropriate for the size. Also not that if you purchase a model that is too large for the room, and then you are at risk of growing mold and bacteria in the room.

When you purchase a humidifier you also want to think about noise level settings. If the noise will bother you then look for a model that has a silent switch.

If you are looking for a model that is easy to clean and doesn't take much effort, then look at the specifications. Some models are a real pain to keep clean and refill.

A humidifier for your home might be the exact solution that you need to clear up your sinuses or clear your dry skin problems.
