Ionic Pro Air Purifier

by Stefan

I purchased an Ionic Pro two years ago, and we've used it off and on. The quality of the product seems good to me, as the plastic used in its construction is durable, and does not crack or scratch easily.

The reason we have stopped using it is due to reports of the Ionic purifiers creating ozone, which is very harmful to people. It does seem to help keep the air clean, but in the interest of saving energy and thus money, we have been keeping our windows open in the summer, so running an air purifier becomes kind of an extra waste of energy.

I think it's a decent product that has good intentions, but the results you get for the cost of the product just don't add up, and they come with the risk of generating ozone in your house.

I think in time that a better version will be produced that is more helpful to people with allergies, or perhaps people living in cities with air quality problems. Where I live, we have plenty of pollen and such, but the air quality overall is decent.

I don't think I would recommend this product to friends and family, due to the perceived risk of ozone generation, however I still think that having good air quality is important, and someone with truly serious needs for better air should consider an alternative that's proven to work, such as an HVAC system for their house or building.

good starter unit

Pros
- quiet
- affordable

Cons
- still lots of dust in the air
- needs to be cleaned weekly

We purchased the Ionic Pro at the end of 2009. It seems to work ok though I don’t see significant difference in air quality. We still have a lot of dust in the air and in the house. The unit is however easy to clean. You simply remove a small lid on top and slide out the “blades” you then wipe them clean with a damp cloth. We never found that our blades were caked with dirt and grime even letting it go weeks between cleanings. This to me either means the unit isn’t working or my house is free of all things bad. I lean more towards the first than the second. The machine was very quiet and with the exception of a tiny bright blue light on the top of it you wouldn’t know it was on.

We purchased the unit from Wal-mart and found it to be inexpensive (less than $100). In fairness, it is possible that the machine took some odor out of the air. We have a golden retriever and I have never had my home smell like dog so that’s a plus. I think I was looking for a miracle machine that would allow me to cut my chore of dusting down and it does not do that. Though I’m not sure that’s it’s claim anyway. I would think if you were a smoker or had allergies it might be worth a try. The combo or quiet and affordable is probably a good way to go for a starter unit.
