LG LWHD1200HR

by Patrick
(Cumming GA)

We added an addition to our house and instead of running central heat and central air to the new room we decided to use a window unit. Our room is 320 square feet which would require around an 8,000 BTU system. Since we wanted to get heat and air from the same unit, we had to get one with a little more power. We chose the 12,000 BTU model. We purchased the system in January 2009.

During the winter, the system adequately heated the room, but we did have to run the system at night on some of the colder nights so that it would be comfortable in the morning. There was a noticeable jump in the electric bill during the winter which surprised me considering the system was suppose to be very efficient. Now that the temperatures are getting a little warmer, we are using the air conditioner function of the system.

When we first started using the air function, the system would come on, and then would make a sound like it was having trouble staying on. It would cut off and cut back on every few minutes. I have now been told that there is a requirement that the systems will not come on unless the outside temperature is greater than 72 degrees. I was able to use the fan function of the system to assist in cooling the room, but the room has a large number of windows, and the inside temperature is usually greater than what is outside.

We have been able to supplement the system with an air cooler. We picked one up at the local hardware store. It was helped cool the room during the spring when the outside temperature is too cool for the system to stay on. Overall, I am satisfied with the system, but wish I had known the issues with the air conditioner function. This is a government requirement, so all window units will have this same issue.
