Trane

by Rachael
(Brighton, CO USA)

Our air-conditioner came with our home when we purchased it. It works fairly well, but my husband and I both agree it is probably too small a unit for our home.

The backside of our house faces west, with a lot of windows, and we get tortured by the brutal Colorado sun. Our air-conditioner just can't keep up with the outside temperatures in the summertime during daylight hours.

Even with all blinds closed, the sun bakes the back of our house, making the temperature rise faster than the air-conditioner can put out cool air. We installed an attic fan, which helps, but the upstairs is still almost unbearably hot in the summertime.

The air-conditioner kicks on several times an hour in an attempt to maintain the internal coolness of 75 degrees, but around three in the afternoon, it will run nonstop until after 11 at night.

It costs us a bundle on electric bills, and we generally have just had to get used to the heat and rely more on ceiling fans for comfort. Sleeping at night requires open windows in the bedroom and the ceiling fan set on the highest speed possible to achieve a reasonable amount of comfort to sleep.

Over all, it is an okay unit, but just too small for our 3000 square foot home. As soon as we can upgrade to a larger unit, we will certainly do so.

In the meantime, the one we have works well enough that we don't feel it completely necessary to run out and purchase a newer, larger, more expensive unit.

Sometimes makes a strange noise
by: Chris N

This Trane model XB13 2TTB3036A air conditioner came with our house when we purchased it new. We had a little choice in which air conditioner we wanted when buying a home. For instance, if we went with a different builder, they would have used a different sub contractor and that sub contractor would have possibly chosen a different air conditioner. It is rather small I believe compared to most, our house is only 1200 square feet.

Regardless, I like this air conditioner, it starts up very fast when called upon and blows quite cool, even in the 100 or more degree weather where I live. I have heard of Trane's reputation in the past and I have to say that I was quite pleased to find out our new home had this model.

This air conditioner I don't believe is specifically rated for most energy saving or efficiency. I believe I could save roughly 10 percent on my energy bills if I changed over to a Energy Star Air Conditioner.

A few bad things about the air conditioner are 1.) Its quite loud when running.
2.) It makes a strange noise sometimes when having to start and stop multiples times a day. Like a vibrating metal sound but it goes away after about 10 seconds. I assume this may be normal for most air conditioners and compressor and what not. This model air conditioner only has a 5 year warranty I found out. I like to think I do not use it as much as most people so hope fully one could extend that to 10 years.

When shopping for a new air conditioner I would look at Trane's first, probably energy efficient, larger and much quieter models, however. Possibly a Carrier model otherwise.
