Our family purchased the Vicks humidifier when our youngest child caught a nasty chest cold. Remembering our own childhood, and the treatment of our mothers, my wife and filled the unit up with water and Vicks decongestant and set it to run all night as our child slept. It seemed to allow our daughter to sleep much more peacefully than without it, as compared to the previous night.
The unit has a built in air filter which helps ensure that the vapor coming from the unit is clean and germ free. It runs very quietly. This unit ran all night in our daughter's room and did not disturb her at all. Soon after you turn this unit on, you will notice the water vapor streaming from the unit. The capacity of the water basin was large enough for the entire night, so neither my wife nor I had to get up and refill the basin.
We live in Oregon so we didn't notice a hugh difference in the humidity in the room, but we purchased it to deliver decongestant, not moisten the air. Since this unit is made by Vicks, the same company that makes the decongestant, it performed its function just fine. We've had the unit for a few years and have had occasion to use it several times. It always works just fine with no maintenance. We would gladly recommend this unit.
