So who is the Whirlpool Company and why is there brand or air conditioners any different than any of the others on the market and what do you, as a consumer need to know and care about when looking into such things? That, my friend, is precisely what we are going to discuss here.

The Whirlpool Company

The Whirlpool Company, by name, has only been around since nineteen fifty, but the company was actually started back in nineteen eleven as the Upton Machine Company which renamed after a merger to the Nineteen Hundred Company in nineteen twenty-nine.

Today the Whirlpool Corporation has annual sales of over eighteen billion dollars and trades a plethora of different brands under this corporate umbrella including Maytag, Kitchen Aid, Jenn Aire to name just a few. Whirlpool Gold Series

As we look over the line we have the Gold series and these really pack a lot of punch into the line. They start at the basic one and one half ton SEER thirteen model which is still using the R-22 refrigerant which is being phased out for ecological reasons and continues on to the full five tom eighteen SEER unit which is ULTRA efficient and will save you money in the long run by how much it saves in energy operating costs.

All but two of these models feature an integral sound blanket to help keep the outside noise reaching your ears to a minimum. As far as warranty goes, every model in the line with the exception of the entry unit and the eighteen SEER unit come standard with a five year parts and ten year compressor warranty. The entry or builders grade model has a five year part and five year compressor warranty and the eighteen SEER comes with a full ten years on the parts and the compressor.

Two Stage Compressor

Two models in the line also come with the two-stage compressor. So what is that and why do I need to know? Glad you brought it up. A two-stage compressor is like two compressors in one. If there is a minimal load needed to cool the house or pull the humidity out, you get the lower powered compressor doing its job. However, at a certain point your house needs to get cooled or de-humidified quickly.

That is where the second stage kicks in. Think of it like a turbo for your car. Or a passing gear from older cars where you get where you need to get fast and then kick back down to the lower powered cruise. It takes less to keep it cool once it is there than it does to get it there. So in this case fast can be a good thing.

Size

Now as for tonnage. You need to carefully look over your needs. If you get too large of a unit, it will be under efficient and cost you more. The same goes for getting too small of a unit. Either scenario is bad for you as far as efficiency goes.

You need to know you square footage and then a good heating and air company can help make the determination on which ton you need based on that figure. The one thing you may need to figure into the equation would be if you plan on adding an addition to your home. If you do plan on that in the near future, have the heating and air guy figure that into your needs and buy up appropriately.

No matter where you live, you will have a larger unit outside that is transferring air and heat with a unit inside the house. That inside part is the furnace or air handler.

The homes built down south where it is generally warmer don not typically need a furnace and opt instead for a heat pump system to keep things warm in the cooler months and cool in the warmer months. This is an efficient option if you are somewhere where it stays warm more than cold. But if you live where it regularly gets beyond brisk to down right bone chilling cold. Opt for a furnace instead. Your family will thank you.

Gas vs Electric

Of course there is the gas vs. electric debate and that is really a non-issue. You have one or the other installed in your home and you will most likely stay with what you have. If you are building a new construction, then I would suggest weighing the options and going with the best one for your situation. Whirlpool offers both gas and electric units; they have similar features and will give you the same quality.
